10 Reasons Your Child Should Learn the Qur’an

Many prophets were sent to different parts of the world to deliver the message of Tawheed and call people to Allah.

In order to help them successfully execute this mission, Allah gave the prophets the ability to perform some kind of miracle in order to convince people to believe in them.

Musa’s staff turned to a snake, Sulayman could control the jinn, Saalih was given a she-camel, the fire couldn’t burn Ibrahim, and Isa gave life to the dead by the permission of Allah (peace be upon them all).

However, one would ask that what miracle was given to the best among all the prophets, Muhammad (S.A.W)?

As Abu Hurayrah (R.A) reported, the Prophet (S.A.W) said:

“There was not a Prophet from amongst the Prophets, except that he was given the like of (miracles) upon which people believed. (As for me), I have been given Wahy (Divine Inspiration) which Allah has revealed to me, and therefore I hope that my followers will outnumber the followers of the other Prophets on the Day of Resurrection.”

Sahih Bukhari no. 4981 and Sahih Muslim no. 152.

The Qur’an has been given to the Prophet (SAW) as a miracle. It is a miracle unlike any other one given to previous prophets, because it is a miracle that will remain unchanged till the end of time.

We couldn’t witness the staff turning into a snake or the dead coming to life. However, with the Qur’an, we can continuously witness the supreme miracle that Allah has bestowed this Ummah.

It is therefore very critical to help our children learn this miraculous book. Below are 10 reasons why should your child should learn the Qur’an?

  1. The Qur’an is a gift from the One who loves us more than anyone else. This is the primary reason why your child should learn the Qur’an—because it is from the divine creator. The Qur’an is a gift from Allah to mankind. It contains guidance for our hearts and calmness for our souls. However, it is only those who learn and study the book will ever taste the guidance and calmness it contains. Learning the Qur’an helps your child realize the guidance it provides.
  2. To build a strong connection with Allah. Young people during the time of the Prophet (SAW) were the leaders of Deen and were at the forefront of righteousness. Today, however, young people are tilting towards disbelieve and away from Allah. Why? Because young people are not learning the Qur’an anymore. Learning the Qur’an will improve the connection your child has with Allah and set them on a path to righteousness from a young age.
  3. To develop strong mental health and emotional wellbeing.

A lot of young people are increasingly getting into emotional problems from an early age. Research shows that half of all mental health crisis begin before mid-teens. Why? Mainly because of the many different fitna that exist in the world today.

On the other hand, if your child learns the Qur’an, he or she is very likely to avoid such problems because the Qur’an fills the heart with peace and reassurance.

A mind that is filled with Qur’an is protected against evils. By learning the Qur’an, your child will be able to maintain an emotionally stable life from an early age.

4. To benefit from the intercession of the Qur’an. The Prophet (SAW) told us that the Qur’an will serve as a means of intercession for the one who recites and learns it on the Day of Judgement. The hadith goes thus:

“Fasting and the Qur’ān will intercede for the slave on the Day of Judgement. Fasting will say, ‘O My Lord! I prevented him from food and desires during the day, so accept my intercession for him.’ And the Qur’ān will say, ‘I prevented him from sleep during the night, so accept my intercession for him.’ …thus they will intercede.”

Musnad Ahmad no. 6337.

On the day when even you as a parent will not think of your child, the Qur’an will serve as an intercessor on their behalf.

The Day of judgement is a day when mother and child will run from each other because of the fear in their hearts. As a parent, you won’t be able to save your child on that day.

However, you have the opportunity to save them today by making them learn the Qur’an

5. The Qur’an will serve as light for them in this world and the next. A man once came to meet the prophet (SAW) and said, “advise me.”

The prophet (SAW) responded by saying:

“It is imperative for you to have Taqwa (fear/consciousness of Allah) for this is the accumulation of all good. Upon you is Jihad in the path of Allah for it is the monasticism of the Muslims and upon you is the Remembrance of Allah and the recitation of His Book, for it is light for you on earth and (a means by which) you will be mentioned in the Heavens.”

Musnad Ahmad no. 11774.

The Qur’an will serve as a source of light for a child that learns it because it contains the word of the divine.

Also, one of the most prominent names of the Qur’an is An-Nur (The Light). This is because it guides to light and chases away darkness.

It is important that your child learns the Qur’an in order to attain light in this world and in the hereafter.

Bismillah…

As we have seen, it is very necessary for our kids to learn the Qur’an and get familiar with it. Unlike the books held by other religions today, the Qur’an is without a single error and it will only guide your child to the right path.

Additionally, memorizing, reciting, and studying the Qur’an is an obligation for all Muslims. By helping your child learn the Holy book at an early age, you are setting them up for a successful life.
